6 Go‑To‑Market Lessons for Startup Founders
AI House | August 13, 2026

This week at AI House, longtime sales leader and board member Kelly Breslin Wright sat down to share what she's learned from helping build Tableau from $0 to $850M, leading Gong as president/COO, and advising founders ever since.
Some of the key lessons Kelly shared on stage:
AI is leveling the playing field. Expertise, speed, even your codebase — all easier to copy now. Strip the branding off a set of competitor homepages and most value props read identical. In a survey on why customers buy and stay with a company, over 60% of the answer came down to one thing: the experience of working with them. Not product. Not price. That's your GTM team, not your model.
AI is leverage, not a replacement for GTM. Yes, use AI to scrape prospects, summarize calls, build QBRs, and do competitive research. But if your reaction is “great, I don’t need to think much about sales and marketing anymore,” you’re missing the point. As the tooling converges, the emotional connection and trust your team builds is the differentiator.
People love to buy. They hate to be sold. Founder-led sales works because founders talk about mission and story. New sales hires often get handed a feature deck instead — and win rates drop. Train new reps on the "why" before the pitch deck.
Know your ICP down to 30 attributes, not two. "We sell to enterprise companies" isn't an ICP. Build out the full list — size, industry, use case, buying signals — then qualify out everything that doesn't fit.
Mission before mechanics. Most founders obsess over features and architecture. Kelly’s point: if your mission and why are fuzzy, everything downstream (GTM, hiring, pricing, positioning) will be noisy. Write a 10–15 word mission that actually means something, and use it as your filter for what you build and who you hire.
Her top 3 priorities, unchanged since Tableau's first year: people, people, people.
