6 takeaways from our AMA with Madrona's Tim Porter

We hosted a VC AMA with Madrona Managing Director Tim Porter, who spent time at AI House sharing insights and advice for founders. Some of the key takeaways from the discussion with AI House Incubator Managing Director Yifan Zhang:

1. "Repeatability" beats a big forecast. "$100M in 2 years" is usually a red flag, not ambition. What Tim wants to see: a handful of customers you can explain how you found, and evidence you can do it again.

2. Moats are shifting toward speed, insight, and distribution. With models available to everyone, the edge comes from how fast a team ships, how deep their customer/domain knowledge runs, and — eventually — who owns the distribution channel.

3. Land cheap, prove value, expand. There is more consumption- and success-based pricing tied directly to customer ROI. Early on, it's usually better to win more customers at reasonable margins than to over-optimize deal size.

4. Diligence your board like they diligence you. The worst board behavior: over-promising then disappearing, showing up unprepared, or staying silent in the meeting only to pile on afterward. The best board members bring candor and stick around "through thick and thin."

5. Big Tech tenure can translate to startup success — with the caveat that you need hands-on builders who stayed close to customers and actually shipped, not just people who managed large orgs.

6. Even VCs worry about the AI bubble. Tim was candid that he worries about AI investments not panning out. The fix isn't avoidance, he said. It's building conviction earlier, before prices get bid up.
